What the Health: What Kind of Exercise Should I Do?

Whenever someone asks what kind of exercise they should do, I always reply with the same question: “What do you like to do?” I strongly believe you will be most successful starting with some kind of movement that you like and then building out from there.

It would be great if it were as simple as only doing what you like, but it is not. There are three aspects of a sturdy exercise regimen: the things that you like to do, the things you are willing to do, and the things you need to do.

Let me give you an example. I like to trail run. I am willing to use the elliptical machine (oof, not my favorite) and run on flat ground to recover from injuries and build up endurance to run on the trails. And I absolutely need to do some strength training. Another example: I like to do triathlons. I am willing to ride a bike so I can compete in triathlons. I need to do strength training to support my endurance abilities and prevent injury. Need one more? I like to swim in the ocean. I am willing to swim in the pool to improve my swim technique and endurance. I need strength training to prevent injury and keep me strong.

I could go on all day with those examples! I would say that most often, and for most people, strength training will end up in the “need to do” category. The health benefits of strength training reach far beyond just injury prevention and strength building. It is also beneficial for bone health, heart health, brain health, metabolism, and can even reduce the risk of developing diabetes! It is a crucial part of any exercise routine! The “willing to do” category fluctuates a bit more, depending on the season and your current circumstances. I think of it as the activity that best supports your current favorite “like” and makes it possible. As for the “like to do” category…the world is your oyster, as they say.

What you like the most may change many times throughout your life. Learning new activities, as well as how to support them, is so good for you! I wish you all the luck in your exercise  endeavors and encourage you to try something new this summer!
